NCAA Hockey Tournament: Providence's Gillies blanks Quinnipiac

Sophomore Jon Gillies stopped 36 shots and four different players scored as the Providence College hockey team blanked Quinnipiac, 4-0, in an East Regional semifinal Friday in Bridgeport, Conn.

Mark Jankowski, Anthony Florentino, Shane Luke and Trevor Mingoia scored for the Friars of Hockey East, seeded third in the regional. Providence advanced to play top seed Union in today’s regional final at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to the Frozen Four.

Michael Garteig made 22 saves for second-seeded Quinnipiac of the ECAC, coached by Bedford, N.H., native Rand Pecknold.




Union 5, Vermont 2: In the other East Regional game in Bridgeport, Conn., Matt Hatch and Max Novak each scored a pair of goal to lead the top-seeded Dutchmen of the ECAC past fourth-seeded UVM of Hockey East. Chris McCarthy scored both goals for the Catamounts, who were outshot, 39-25.




Ferris State 1, Colgate 0: In a Midwest Regional game in Cincinnati, Gerald Mayhew scored the game’s only goal, on a power play halfway through the first period, to lift the second-seeded Bulldogs over the ECAC’s Raiders.
