Pelham man cited for distracted driving

HUDSON — A Pelham man trying to use his cellphone hit a cable attached to a utility pole, knocking out power to area homes early Saturday, police said.

Jeremy Wallace, 20, who wasn't injured was issued a citation for negligent driving, Hudson police said.

Wallace was driving a car east on Dugout Road around 1:30 a.m. while trying to use his phone and that "diverted his attention," police said.

Wallace hit the support cable of a utility pole. The pole itself wasn't damaged, but the crash's impact caused a power outage on Dugout Road, requiring Public Service of New Hampshire to come and fix the problem.

Wallace is scheduled to appear in the 9th Circuit Court on April 17, authorities said. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, police said.
