Volunteers needed for Londonderry clean-up events

LONDONDERRY — Spring is finally in the air, which means organizers of Londonderry’s two town-wide cleanups are deep in the process of rallying volunteers.

The town’s Anti-Litter Advisory Committee and the Beautify Londonderry Committee are organizing this year’s efforts.

For three Saturdays this month, volunteers will pick up litter at various locations around town as part of the “Roadside Pride: Pick It Up” campaign.

Kerri Stanley, chairman of Beautify Londonderry, said cleanups are scheduled for April 12, 19 and 26.

Stanley noted that any groups or individuals wanting to assist in those efforts are encouraged to meet in the Matthew Thornton Elementary School parking lot on those days between 9 a.m. and noon.

Volunteers will be given supplies, such as trash bags and gloves, and sent to various neighborhoods around town.

Once the litter picked up, volunteers will leave the filled trash bags along the roadside for pickup the following Mondays.

The Beautify Londonderry project will begin the first weekend in May and end on May 25.Stanley said groups and individuals are needed to complete various projects around town, such as spreading mulch outside the schools, fire stations, Town Hall and police station, and plant colorful flowers.“We’d prefer groups sign up ahead of time,” she said. “That way we can prepare in advance based on the specific needs of each group and the number of volunteers.”

In previous years, local landscapers and greenhouses have donated mulch and plants. Town officials are hoping some local businesses will likewise come forward in preparing for this spring’s efforts.

“It’s a great cause for the town and provides community service opportunities for any individual or group needing to complete some hours,” Stanley said. “We welcome returning volunteers and encourage some new folks to join us this year.”

Those who wish to assist with Beautify Londonderry projects may send emails to or fill a form found on the town’s website.
