Portsmouth school in lockdown as arrest is made

PORTSMOUTH – A homeless man who police say pointed a gun at a woman as they both waited at a red light on Woodbury Avenue was arrested Thursday morning, but not before a local school was put in lockdown.
Darnell Austin, 39, with no fixed address, was arrested by detectives in an unmarked car after they searched the area of the Portsmouth Public Library.
Austin is charged with criminal threatening and reckless conduct, both Class B felonies.
The incident started about 10:30 a.m. when a woman called police to say Austin, who is known to her, pulled up beside her car at a red light on Woodbury Avenue and pointed a gun at her.
Because the Middle School was located nearby, the school resource officer put the school into lockdown.
Austin is being held on $10,000 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in 10th Circuit Court, Portsmouth District Division.
