BALTIMORE — Designated hitter David Ortiz and shortstop Xander Bogaerts paced a 14-hit Boston attack with three hits apiece, and the Red Sox scored a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.
Ortiz (3-for-5) and Bogaerts (3-for-4) both finished with three singles apiece. Ortiz also drove in a run in the third, while Bogaerts scored in the second and fourth as Boston (2-1) took an early 3-0 lead.
The Red Sox pounded Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (0-1) for four runs on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Eight Boston starters got hits as Baltimore pitchers never retired the Red Sox in order. Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks and center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. each added two hits.
Boston left-hander Felix Doubront (1-0) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Right-hander Brandon Workman relieved him in the sixth, and he threw a wild pitch that let Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis score later in the inning to make it 4-3.
The Boston bullpen finished the job. Right-hander Junichi Tazawa escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth, and closer Koji Uehara celebrated his 39th birthday by throwing a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.
Catcher Matt Wieters led the Orioles (1-2) with three hits, including an RBI double. Right fielder Nick Markakis and Davis each finished with two hits.
Boston took a 1-0 lead in the second. Bogaerts led off with a single and went to third when right fielder Daniel Nava followed with a single. Middlebrooks then grounded into a double play, scoring Bogaerts.
Ortiz made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the third. Ortiz blooped a ball that Orioles left fielder Nelson Cruz raced in and dived for, but the ball got past him by a few feet. Bradley scored all the way from first because he was running hard with two outs.
The Red Sox kept added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from catcher David Ross.
Baltimore answered with two in the bottom half of the fourth. Wieters lined a run-scoring double to right, and designated hitter Delmon Young followed with an RBI single. That cut Boston’s lead to 3-2.
