Derry workshop will review proposed budget

DERRY — Town Councilors will begin reviewing the proposed Fiscal Year 2015 budget during a workshop scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday.

The workshop will include a review of the various internal divisions of Public Works. It is the first of a series of workshops scheduled over the next several weeks to prepare the budget.

Acting Administrator Larry Budreau gave councilors a glimpse of the proposed budget earlier this week.

The proposed budget currently shows expenditures of $36,989,488, which is .2 percent less than this year’s budget of $37,061,798.

And the proposed tax rate would increase by 2 cents from $10.39 to $10.41, Budreau said in the presentation.

But through some recent developments with the town’s health care costs, the proposed budget and tax rate are likely to be reduced. Budreau said the town had just received news that the HealthTrust premium levels have been set for Fiscal Year 2015, resulting in $30,000 less in expenditures for Derry.

In addition, Budreau said Northern New England Benefit Trust, which provides health insurance to the Teamsters and Public Works employees, has just agreed to lock in a premium for the town. The new figure comes in less than what Derry had budgeted, resulting in approximately $21,000 less in expenditures, Budreau said.

If councilors approve these changes, the proposed budget would be reduced to $36,938,488 and the tax rate would remain level at $10.39, Budreau said.

Additional budget review workshops are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on April 17, 22 and 24, Budreau said.
