Ayotte kicks off conservative political summit

MANCHESTER -- New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte opened the Freedom Summit, a gathering of conservative political activists in Manchester Saturday, urging Granite State Republicans to work for victory in the 2014 mid-term elections as well as the 2016 presidential election to end Democratic control of the White House and the U.S. Senate.

“Too often, the solution to every problem is bigger, more intrusive, more burdensome government,' Ayotte said.

But the 2016 election weighed heavily on the day's participants, with the presence of prospective presidential candidates and a large delegation of national media.

While pointing out the importance of New Hampshire's lead-off spot in the presidential election process, Ayotte urged the party activists to start work now to elect Republican candidates to the U.S. Senate, and giving the GOP control of both houses of Congress.

“To repeal Obamacare, we have to win elections, and that starts with a Republcian takeover of the United States Senate,” Ayotte said. “When Republicans take over the Untied States Senate (Majority Leader) Harry Reid will go and that is a cause for celebration."

The gathering in Manchester brought out several hundred activists to hear conservative speakers, including several potential Republican presidential candidates. The event was sponsored by the conservative advocacy groups Citizens United and Americans for Prosperity,.

Other speakers scheduled to participate in the Manchester event included U.S. Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah, and U.S. Reps. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Louis Gohmert of Texas and Steve King, of Iowa; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and business tycoon Donald Trump.
