Search for missing swimmer halted in Bristol, to continue Tuesday

BRISTOL – A search for a missing swimmer in the Baker River below Profile Falls was called off late Tuesday night because the river was too dangerous for rescue crews to continue searching.

A call just before 8 p.m. for a water rescue brought more than a dozen firefighters from Bristol and New Hampton to the 30-foot falls area, a popular site for summer swimming.

"There were three people swimming, and we have confirmed witness sitings that one of them went under," said Fire Chief Steve Yannuzzi.

The missing person is a man in his 20s or 30s, Yannuzzi said. Authorities would not identify him.

At 10 p.m., the search was called off, though rescue crews say there was still a missing person at the falls, he said.

The search is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, though heavy rain is forecast for the area.

State Fish and Game officers will be joining the search, he said.

"There is still a missing person, but we aren't assuming anything, we can't really say anything until we find something," Yannuzzi said.

The river was high because of the snow melt, and the water was rushing very fast.

"There comes a point where I have to take into account the safety of my searchers. The sun had gone down, the river was very high and very dangerous. It just became too dangerous to keep searching," he said.

Searchers walked the shoreline in a 2-mile search area, he said, but found no sign of the missing man.
