SWANZEY - A man pulled by an off-duty firefighter from a second-alarm house fire on Sawyers Crossing Road Friday night is listed in "serious condition" at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a hospital spokesman said Monday.
Kenneth Blair, 62, suffered burns during a blaze at his home, said Kelson Mulcahy, Swanzey Fire Department EMS coordinator.
Firefighters went to 365 Sawyers Crossing Road at 10:46 p.m. after off-duty firefighter Justin Tracy reported a house fire with people trapped in the building.
Tracy spotted the fire while driving on the road and heard cries for help coming from the home, Mulcahy said.
After he reported the fire, Tracy entered the house and pulled the only occupant, Blair, outside and began assisting him with his burn injuries.
Blair was taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene and later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Ten community fire departments responded to the scene, and the fire was put out in 30 minutes, Mulcahy said. Crews remained on scene until about 6 a.m. Saturday.
No one else was injured in the fire.
Swanzey firefighters and the state Fire Marshal's Office investigated Saturday. The fire is believed to be accidental, but there is no official ruling on the cause yet, Mulcahy said. An investigation is ongoing, Mulcahy said.
The home was badly damaged in the blaze, he said. "It's mostly likely going to be a total loss."
