Man dies in Northumberland crash

NORTHUMBERLAND - Despite the best efforts of passersby, a man diedafter a fiery crash Friday morning on Route 3 in Northumberland, according the town's police chief.

"We got a report that a car hit a tree and was on fire," Police Chief Marcel Platt said Monday. "Upon my arrival, the car was fully engulfed," said Platt, adding that "at least three" passersby stopped on the highway and attempted to save the driver - the lone occupant of the car - pulling him from the flaming wreck of a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder.

Their efforts were in vain, however, as were those of medical personnel en route to - and at - Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster where he died from his injuries, according to the chief.

Police did not release the driver's identity, according to Platt, who said no identification was found on him and nothing could be salvaged from the vehicle.
The New Hampshire Medical Examiner's Office in Concord was working Monday to establish positive identification, and police were also attempting to determine the cause of the crash that took place not far from the Bruce Transportation garage, Platt said.
