Hooksett officials move to correct election error

HOOKSETT — Last week, Hooksett officials realized they had made a mistake in posting four open town council vacancies, having identified each as a three-year seat. In reality, one of two at-large openings represented a one-year commitment.

On Friday, the filing period was reopened and extended through Thursday to allow anyone interested in running for the one-year position to sign up or switch elections.

“We consulted with the town attorney and the Secretary of State and were advised that the most equitable means of curing the error would be to reopen the filing period for both the three-year and the one-year at-large positions,” said Hooksett Town Clerk Todd Rainier. “In my eyes, this is definitely a good thing because it’s fair and equitable, and it acknowledges everything it needs to without excluding anyone.”

Former Hooksett Police Commissioner Clark Karolian had initially signed up to run for what he thought was one of two three-year seats. When he was informed of the mistake he petitioned the Hooksett Town Clerk’s office to take action to correct the situation. Now, instead of running against incumbent chairman Jim Sullivan for the three-year position, he’ll face Adam Jennings for the one-year slot.

“I think it was the right thing to do,” said Karolian of the filing period being reopened. “Obviously this opens up to the public the one-year term and gives the opportunity to others who did not know that was available to file for it if they wanted to, so it was good that they took action and corrected the situation.

“It appears to be an honest mistake,” he added. “The town clerk acknowledges the error when it was brought to (his) attention. I requested they correct the situation, which they’ve done to my satisfaction, and I look forward to moving forward from here.”

The Town Clerk’s office is open until 5 p.m. on Thursday for anyone else wishing to run for one of the two open at-large seats.
