Deadline extended for startup competition in Rochester

ROCHESTER — Innovators across the Seacoast are submitting their business ideas for a chance to make their dreams a reality.

Participants in the second annual Start Up 2014 Competition have a chance to win more than $31,000 in cash and assistance.

While a previously extended deadline was Tuesday, organizers will accept applications until Friday, according to Mary Ellen Humphrey, economic development specialist for the city.

“We will allow a ‘grace period’ until Friday, unofficially,” Humphries said Tuesday.

Humphries said applicants who want to start a business or are from a business with a new idea must submit a five-page business plan.

“We have quite a few in the pipeline,” Humphries said, adding judges want to ensure applicants have thought out the whole idea, including determining the potential market.

Finalists will be selected April 22, and the winners, including the recipient of the Rising Star Award for outstanding student applicants, will be announced May 8.

Last year’s winner, Kinetic Surface Control of Newmarket, took advantage of the $20,000 prize from the inaugural Start Up Rochester competition to develop its idea for a water-based technology to strip paint and corrosion from metal, concrete or asphalt surfaces.

“It really did help them get some visibility,” Humphries said, adding the company was able to contract with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, in Kittery, Maine.

Humphries said the winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, an interest-free loan of $10,000 from Strafford Economic Development Corp. of New Hampshire and a variety of services, including $2,500 in legal assistance, $2,500 for accounting, a $1,000 promotional package from the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce and $5,000 in free rent at the Gonic mill.

She said the SEDC, which is based in Dover, will help select the winner.
