Bedford boys' lacrosse streak reaches 41 wins

BEDFORD — Bedford High's boys' lacrosse team began its final season at Division II with a dominating 14-4 win over Merrimack on Wednesday.

The two-time defending champion Bulldogs extended their winning streak to 41-games. Merrimack fell to 1-1.

"We started out the game really hot," said Bedford coach Matt Guerard. "We let it slide a little toward the end but overall we're very happy with the start of the season."

"We just came out flat. That's not how we normally play," said Merrimack coach Brian Miller.

Senior captain Dan Colella led the Bedford offense with five goals and three assists. Dakota Clark had three goals. Pierre Watt, Connor Cyr, Matt Brewster and John Tiano scored for Merrimack.

"He plays hard every single game," said Guerard of Colella. "When he scores that many goals you can see the result of that work."

"Fundamentally he's a sound player," said Miller. "If you don't pay attention to him he's gonna make you pay."

Colella said he and his teammates are driven to win. "The seniors know it's their last year so they want to strive for greatness," said Colella. "I'm going to leave it all on the field every game."

Tomahawk goalkeeper Robby Todd must have felt like he was in a shooting gallery as Bedford peppered him with 36 shots. Bedford goalie Matt Howe faced 18 Merrimack shots.

The Bulldogs led 6-0 after one quarter and 11-0 at the half. Just over two minutes into the third quarter the game went to running time when Bedford took a 12-goal lead.

The Tomahawks finally scored with 1:28 remaining in the third period when Pierre Watt beat Howe on a breakaway off a Bulldog turnover.

Merrimack added three more goals in the fourth once Guerard started playing his reserves.

Does the winning streak put any pressure on the Bedford players? "We are aware of it. We worked hard for it," said Colella. "If we lose a game, that's OK. We're still a good team, but we want to win."
