Rescue Run, Earth Day festivities set for April 26

PORTSMOUTH - The Seacoast Science Center's annual trail race, formerly known as the Whale of a 5K Trail Race, has a new name to reflect its newest initiative: marine mammal rescue.

Rescue Run: Race for Marine Mammals, presented by Kennebunk Savings, kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 26.

The Rescue Run features the same 5K chip-timed race through Odiorne Point State Park. The scenic 5K cross-country trail will bring runners through the forest, by the rocky shore, on the sandy beach and alongside historic military fortifications. Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers. Competitive and noncompetitive runners and walkers are welcome, but the 5K trail is not stroller-friendly.

The Rescue Run is part of the Run Portsmouth race series. Check out the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce website to learn about other races in the series.

Family 2-mile jog/walk

New this year, the whole family can participate a 2-mile jog stroller-friendly walk on the trails. Groups of friends or family members can register as a team and save. Teams must have five or more participants and are encouraged to get creative with matching costumes and fanfare.

Those wishing do more to support Marine Mammal Rescue can participate in the social fundraising option, with a personal fundraising Web page available upon completion of registration, or by using a pledge form. Raffle tickets for six gift baskets, ranging in value from $195 to $360 are $1 each and may be purchased at the center or online.The race starts at 9 a.m.; registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. The cost for the race or walk, ages 13 and up is $20 before April 22, $23 thereafter. Ages 6-12 is $12 before April 22, $15 thereafter. Team registrants' rates are discounted.

Earth Day celebration

An Earth Day celebration will be held Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to noon free of charge. There will be eco-friendly kids crafts, a kids obstacle course, games, special programs and vendor stations.

At 11 a.m. join the Blue Ocean Society for a Beach cleanup. Supplies are provided and all participants will be entered to win a prize following the cleanup - you must be present to win the prize.
