Dartmouth’s Whalen earns 500th coaching victory

When you can average 20 wins a season as a college baseball coach, you’re doing something right.

A Dartmouth doubleheader sweep of Brown in Providence, R.I., Sunday rewarded Big Green coach John Whalen with his 500th career coaching win in his 25th season at the helm.

Whalen picked up his 500th win with the first of two victories at Brown. Freshman Mike Concato twirled a four-hit shutout and junior Nick Lombardi homered and doubled in Dartmouth’s opening win, 7-0, giving Whalen his 500th triumph.

In the nightcap, Joe Purritano homered and drove in the final two runs in a 3-2 Dartmouth victory.

Whalen’s career record stands at 501-472-1.

Under Whalen, Dartmouth has racked up two Ivy titles and nine Red Rolfe Division crowns. He has produced 64 first-team All-Ivy and All-EIBL selections. Twenty-four players under Whalen have reached the professional ranks.
