Ice-out declared on Forest Lake

WHITEFIELD — Spring's arrival throughout the North Country heralds "ice out" on Forest Lake and a third consecutive, successful fundraiser for the Whitefield Lions Club.

Inspired by a similar contest at nearby Joe's Pond in Vermont, the club in 2012 began its own ice out competition on Forest Lake, which lies in the towns of Dalton and Whitefield. Each year the event has grown, said member Don Discenzo, on Tuesday.

This year, there were 800 entries in the contest, and a Dunbarton resident guessed that ice out would occur at 7:21 p.m. April 18. It actually happened 26 minutes later, however, when a concrete block broke through the ice on Forest Lake, in the process stretching a rope that then yanked the power cord of an onshore electric clock from its socket.

He speculated that because the winter of 2013-2014 was seemingly longer, colder and snowier than usual, "We had a lot of people thinking that the ice was going to be there to May."

Discenzo thanked the participants and said the Lake Forest ice out contest would be back next winter. He said the money raised will support Lions Club programs in and around Whitefield.

The inaugural ice out on Forest Lake was March 25, 2012, while last year's was on April 12.

Forest Lake is considerably smaller than Lake Winnipesaukee, which has had its own ice out competition for considerably longer. That call is expected today.
