Getting groceries on the go in Goffstown
GOFFSTOWN — Hannaford Supermarket on Mast Road will soon be the second store of its kind in the Granite State to offer curbside grocery pick-up.
The Goffstown Planning Board approved a conditional use permit Thursday to allow drive-through service.
The plans call for a drive-up grocery pick-up area to the left front of the existing building. Customers who pre-order online would drive up at the specified time, announce themselves at the call box, and pull into one of five reserved spaces on the side. A store employee would then deliver the groceries to the car. The transaction should take about five minutes.
The hours of operation would be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The busiest times are expected to be 10 a.m. to noon and 4 pm. to 6 p.m.
Planning board Chairman Barbara Griffin said she was in favor of the project but questioned whether the drive-through should be on the side of the building. The front area already has a fair amount of traffic and curbside stopping, Griffin said.
Griffith said demand for the service is likely there.
“The demographic of this store is such that I think this is going to be a well-used service,” Griffin said.
Hannaford Bros. presenter J.M. Lord said that a traffic backup was unlikely because cars advance to a reserved empty spot right after hitting the call button.
Hannaford To Go service is now offered in Dover and North Windham, Maine. Bill McKenney, senior site engineering project manager for Hannaford Bros., said customers like the added convenience of ordering online and having their items ready at a designated time. Goffstown is a good choice for expanding the service, he said.
“We think it’s a good market for Hannaford To Go and we’d like to offer the additional convenience for our customers,” McKenney said.
Hannaford Bros. will be working on the plans over the next few months and looks to start offering the service later this year, McKenney said.
