Police arrest second man in Salem safe heist

SALEM – A 31-year-old man wanted for taking an estimated $210,000 in cash from a Salem home was arrested in Lowell, Mass., after a police pursuit on Friday, police said.

Michael Meucci of Salem is being held at a Massachusetts jail on a fugitive from justice warrant for allegedly being part of a burglary crew that took a safe full of cash from a home at 24 Main St. on April 14.

His alleged partner in the burglary, Shawn Russell, 30, of Methuen, Mass., is being held on burglary-related charges after his arrest last Thursday.

Deputy police chief Shawn Patten said Monday that detectives are still working to identify others who were involved in the break-in.

“We believe more than those two are involved,” Patten said. “Let’s put it this way, they are not exactly cooperating with the investigation.”

Meucci was taken into custody after being involved in a car crash and fleeing from Lowell, Mass., police on Friday, according to Patten.

Witnesses told police they saw three men the day before the break-in loitering near the Main Street home. Police said the burglars also fled from the home in a dark-colored Kia shortly before they arrived around 6 p.m.

When police arrested Russell last week at a Market Basket parking lot, they recovered $40,000 of the money and 42 grams of heroin believed to have been purchased with the stolen cash.

A search of a Methuen, Mass., home where Russell once lived also led police to find the looted safe and the Kia that police say was used in the burglary. Police seized two-way radios, ski masks, knives, zip ties, air soft pistols and gloves after getting a search warrant for the car, police said.

Meucci and Russell are both facing charges of burglary, theft by unauthorized taking and conduct after an accident.

Meucci may not be returning to New Hampshire soon to answer the charges. That’s because he was already wanted in Lowell for breaking and entering from a 2011 case and faces new charges there from Friday’s pursuit.
