Plymouth man arrested for Laconia child-care assault from a decade ago

LACONIA - A Plymouth man is accused of sexually molesting a 5-year-old girl more than a decade ago at a home child-care center operated by his then-wife on West Street in Laconia.

Louis E. Pettingill, 44, of 28 Hemlock Terrace, was arrested Tuesday by Laconia police and charged with one count of aggravated felonious sexual assault. He is accused of sexually assaulting the girl between April 2002 and September 2003.

Sgt. Thomas Swett said the child-care center closed down years ago and Pettingill and his wife have since divorced.

The incident remains under investigation. Swett said while the teen's complaint is the only one police have received, investigators are interested in speaking with anyone with additional information about her case or any other alleged incidents. Police can be reached at 524-5252 or, to remain anonymous, call the Greater Laconia Crime Line at 524-1717.

Pettingill is free on $1,500 personal recognizance bail. He is to be arraigned June 12 in 4th Circuit Court, Laconia District Division.
