UNH Police on crime reporting: There's an app for that

DURHAM — University of New Hampshire Police Chief Paul Dean recognizes that the best way to fight campus crime is to make crime reporting as convenient as possible.

With that in mind, Dean's department has connected with a smartphone app that allows students, parents, faculty, UNH sports fans or anyone else who may be on campus to report directly to one of his dispatchers.

"We've worked to communicate public safety messages through our website, our Facebook page and through Twitter, but this app is critical to that effort because it allows for two-way communication between the dispatch office and whoever is reporting the crime on the other end," Dean said.
The "LiveSafe" mobile application, which Dean said was designed by a former UNH student, is free to download to iPhones, smartphones and tablets.

"It's available to you whether you're a full-time student, or if you come onto campus one day a week, one day a year or you're just passing through," he said.
Dean said a lot of people are nervous about getting involved, especially in a potentially dangerous situation. The app allows a crime to be reported anonymously

"Students don't like to use the phone these days," he said. "They prefer to text, and this allows them to report a situation with a couple swipes of their fingertips."
It also provides a tactical advantage to responding officers, Dean said.

"It gives us the information we need that's missing, that we don't necessarily know going in," he said. "Plus, the reality is police can't be everywhere, so to me, this provides everyone the opportunity to get involved in making this campus safe, and I just think it's a good way for students to practice good public safety habits."
