Rock Cats double up Fisher Cats, 4-2


A three-run sixth inning propelled the New Britain Rock Cats to a 4-2 Eastern League victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at New Britain Stadium on Friday night.

A two-run home run by designated hitter Kennys Vargas highlighted the three-run fifth. New Britain (8-17) scored its other run in the bottom of the first on first baseman Nate Hanson’s solo home run.

First baseman Mike McDade collected two hits for the Fisher Cats (12-14), who scored a run in the sixth and a run in the eighth.

New Hampshire starter Casey Lawrence pitched the first six innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs (all earned) on four hits. He struck out one and didn’t walk a batter. Scott Gracey tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

New Britain starter Sean Gilmartin earned the win for holding the Fishers to a run on three hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked four. The teams play again tonight at 6:35 p.m.
