John Habib's City Sports: Yukica Chapter recognizes Duval's work, legacy

Almost two years after Dan Duval passed away, his work helping kids continues through his family and friends.

In recognition of all that work, the Joe Yukica New Hampshire Chapter of the National Football Foundation has named its 27th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner in honor of the late three-sport standout. The dinner begins 5:30 p.m. at the Executive Court Banquet Facility in Manchester. Duval is being honored for his sports achievements and for his advocacy for the community’s young people.

“Dan represented what’s right and true for America,” said Jay Fallon, president of the Yukica Chapter. “He was a mentor to countless numbers of kids. This is a man who overcame hard times and addictions. He became a role model for countless youths who face similar problems. Dan showed those young people that you can change your life and become a successful leader in society. Dan Duval never stopped giving back, never stopped reaching out to kids who needed help.”

Duval’s brother, Jeff, said his family was “deeply touched when we heard the foundation was naming its dinner after Danny. I know my brother would have been honored, considering he was a football coach for many years who mentored many kids, including those who excelled in the classroom. It’s truly an honor.”

The third annual Dan Duval Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Friday, June 27, at Derryfield Country Club. Shotgun start is 8:30 a.m., followed by an auctions of sports items to raise money for the Dan Duval Charitable Trust.

“By the end of this school year, the trust will have given out over $15,000 in scholarships and donations,” Jeff Duval said. “We’re planning to honor six more scholarship winners this year.”

Last year’s scholarships went to Desirae Leblanc of Manchester Memorial High; Geraldine Kroll of Manchester’s Trinity High, Dan Duval’s alma mater; Jesse Pinard of Manchester Central, Tanisha Lazarre and Fiorda Perez of Manchester High West, and Danny Cannone of Windham High, who was the recipient of the Dan Duval Community Service Award. Pat O’Neil, Bill Sheehan and Judy Cooper serve on the scholarship committee that will announce the 2014 winners in June.

Duval is seeking sponsors for the golf tournament. He can be reached at 494-0152 or jeffduval@yahoo.com.
