HUDSON — Once it’s operational, Comcast’s new customer support center in Hudson is expected to bring 100 new jobs to the region by year’s end, the company said Monday.
During a press conference at the Presstek complex at 55 Executive Drive, Gov. Maggie Hassan joined state and local officials in announcing the company’s latest milestone.
Expected to open sometime in late summer, the Hudson facility will have a 600-employee capacity, and company officials expect to have about 200 workers employed in Hudson by year’s end.
About half of those positions will be new ones, according to Steve Hackley, senior vice president of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region.
The new Comcast facility will be housed in a 127,000-square-foot portion of the Presstek building. Presstek still occupies a separate 84,000-square-foot section of the building that houses its refurbishment center, demonstration center and digital imaging media manufacturing facility, according to the company website. However, the company has changed hands several times since coming to Hudson in 2006 and has since moved some of its operations out of state.
The facility in the Sagamore Industrial Park was recently on the market for $8.8 million, according to recent property listings, though company officials didn’t disclose the purchase price.
Located within a designated Economic Revitalization Zone, the facility is located within minutes from the Everett Turnpike and the Massachusetts state line.
Hackley said that once the new positions in Hudson are filled, Comcast would have more than 1,700 workers in the Granite State, with more jobs anticipated in the coming years.
“There will definitely be another phase to this,” Hackley added. “Right now our plan is to be welcoming our first Hudson employees before everyone’s summer tans have faded.”
Company officials said the new Hudson facility will feature state-of-the-art technology and include a cafeteria, an employee gym and training facilities.
Jeff Rose, state commissioner of the Department of Resources and Economic Development, said the announcement is great news for New Hampshire.
“Comcast has been a terrific neighbor and corporate partner for our state,” Rose said Monday, noting that in 2012, the company’s total employee investment in the Granite State totaled nearly $170 million. “We’re thrilled to be part of Comcast’s continued growth plans.”
Hudson selectmen chairman Roger Coutu shared Rose’s enthusiasm.
“It’s exciting to be able to share something we’ve known for a long time: That Hudson is a great place for business,” Coutu said. “This area, in particular, is a prime location for growth and expansion.”
Hassan said Comcast, which already operates a dozen different facilities around the state, has been a major player in statewide efforts to bring additional jobs and economic development to the state.
“The competition with other states has been fierce,” Hassan said Monday morning. “But today’s announcement reinforces New Hampshire’s emphasis on high quality-of-life, low taxes and a responsive state government, all of which makes New Hampshire an attractive place for business.”
Comcast opened its Manchester call center at a property once owned by AT&T in 2004, according to Hackley. At the time the site employed about 200 workers. Today the facility at 676 Island Pond Road employs about 1,000 workers, he said.
In August 2011, Comcast opened a 135,000-square-foot warehouse at 9 Northeastern Blvd. in Salem, a site that once housed Cisco Systems.
At the time, the company hired about 140 workers to staff the Salem site, which is where Comcast employees test each piece of equipment to ensure it’s fully operational before it is hand-cleaned, shrink-packaged and sent off to customers around the region.
The company also has facilities in Nashua, Concord, Londonderry, Lebanon and Portsmouth.
