WEARE — Lizzie Brandt of John Stark scored with two minutes remaining to lift the Generals to a 9-8 win over Laconia in a battle between Division III undefeated teams. The Generals improved to 5-0 while Laconia fell to 4-1.

John Stark was able to make that one-goal margin stick thanks to two late saves by goalkeeper Clarissa Foote.

“Those stops were key,” said John Stark coach John Warner. “For a while, it looked like the last team with the ball would win.”

Casey Poirier, Sam Valcourt and Danielle Galli each scored two goals for the Generals. Helen Tautkus had three goals for Laconia while Natalie Compton and Dani Cote each had two.

It was a closely fought game with the sides changing leads several times. Compton got the Sachems on the scoreboard just 39 seconds into the game. Poirer tied it up 40 seconds later.

But from then on goals were hard to come by, thanks to outstanding saves made by both Foote and Laconia’s Lyndsay Paronto. The half ended with the Generals holding a 4-3 lead.

“Both teams played great defense and had solid keepers in net,” said Laconia coach Kerri Howe. “It could have gone either way.”
