‘Block party’ starting up again in June on Manchester's Hanover Street
MANCHESTER — The Hanover Street “block party” is set to return next month, running every weekend from June 6 until Oct. 25.
The nearly fourth-month span is the longest since the closure began three years ago as a pilot program.
The aldermen’s Committee on Public Safety on Monday agreed to the requested dates, made by a representative of the association of businesses that has formed to coordinate the Hanover closure, during which the street is closed to traffic from Chestnut Streeet to within a half block of Elm Street.
The closure would also begin at 5:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than it has in past years, on Friday and Saturday nights.
In past years, bands have offered live entertainment on the street, and restaurants used the sidewalks for expanded outdoor seating. The program has also drawn some criticism from a few downtown businesses, with owners arguing it siphons customers away.
