Auburn officials organize roadside spring cleanup
AUBURN — As part of a townwide spring cleaning effort, Auburn officials have scheduled a roadside cleanup day for this Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon.
“Oftentimes, there’s a lot of trash from the winter,” said Auburn School Board Chairman Alan Villeneuve, who also sits on the Conservation Commission. “You know, the snow has gone away and the roadsides are suddenly clear, and there’s less vegetation right now, so you can typically see more stuff that may have gathered along the roads.
“We’ve been doing this for at least eight years now, and the real goal here is to try to get the community together to pick up trash and help beautify the town,” he added. “It’s also a warmer time of year, so it’s a good time to get out and enjoy the weather, cleanup a bit around town and make it look better for everyone.”
The annual affair is a collaborative effort between the Conservation Commission and the Auburn Fire Department, and the morning begins and ends at the public safety complex, at 55 Eaton Hill Road, with coffee before and a BBQ lunch after.
“The Volunteer Firemen’s Association pays for all the hot dogs and hamburgers and such, and they do it on the town’s behalf, so we’re obviously very appreciative of that,” said Villeneuve.
Volunteers are invited to show up ready to work at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
“We have all the bags and gloves and anything else we may need, and then we assign people routes, and if anyone comes in with a particular neighborhood or street they want, we usually accommodate their requests,” said Fire Chief Bruce Phillips. “And then we head out and try to get as many roads cleaned as we can in three hours.”
