Salem looking to renew sanitary district agreement

SALEM — Selectmen unanimously approved having the town sign a new 30-year agreement with the Greater Lawrence Sanitary District, allowing the district to continue treating wastewater at its treatment facility for the town.

Town Manager Keith Hickey said the terms of the proposed agreement are very similar to those that are in place with the current agreement.

“The town of Salem still remains a non-voting member of the district,” said Hickey. “The town has the ability to participate in public and non-public meetings of the board.”

The agreement now has to be approved by the state’s Department of Environmental Services and the Attorney General and Secretary of State’s offices before going to the Greater Lawrence (Mass.) Sanitary District board for final approval.

The sanitary district also services Lawrence, Mass., Metheun, Mass., Andover, Mass., and North Andover, Mass.
