Monarchs head coach Mark Morris fired

The Los Angeles Kings, parent team of the Manchester Monarchs, on Wednesday informed head coach Mark Morris that his contract will not be renewed.

Behind the bench for the American Hockey League franchise since 2006, Morris is the longest-tenured and winningest coach in Monarchs history, with 332 regular-season victories and 23 playoff wins.

He's also the only coach to win more than 300 games at both the professional and collegiate levels, having won more than 300 with Clarkson University.

But after finishing with the best regular-season record in the Eastern Conference this year, the Monarchs were eliminated in the first round of the AHL playoffs, dropping three straight games to the Norfolk Admirals after winning the opener of the best-of-five series.

The announcement of Morris' firing came five days after Manchester's season ended with a 3-2 defeat at Norfolk.

The Monarchs announced the move in an email that read:

"Earlier today, the Los Angeles Kings informed Manchester Monarchs Head Coach, Mark Morris, that his contract will not be renewed. The following is a statement from Kings President and General Manager, Dean Lombardi:

'We appreciate the job Mark has done for us in Manchester. The team's success on the ice during his tenure and his contributions in helping prepare our young players to be successful at the NHL level have been key contributors to the success of our organization as a whole. These ideals will continue to be a priority for us going forward and we wish Mark the utmost success as there is no doubt he is ready for the next step in his career.'"
