'Star Wars' wannabes line up to audition for famed Cantina Band in YouTube spoof

A creature and a human are sitting in a bar ...

And thus begins the spoof. A star-studded lineup of musicians take turns portraying alien versions of themselves in a sketch in which the famed Cantina Band from “Star Wars” holds auditions for a new member.

BF 1138 (aka Ben Folds) is a soulful storm trooper whose performance piece is a regretful recounting of the day that haunts him: the day he shot a Teddy bear-looking ewok out of a tree in the forest.

Meanwhile JOR DIN SPARKS caps a passionate lament about a Jedi’s difficulty in finding love by appealing to the “Intergalatic Idol” audience for votes.

Then there’s Rick Forcefield (Rick Springfield), who shows off his axe skills while proving the Force is with him by playing guitar with his mind.

The video from CollegeHumor features Folds, Chris Daughtry (whose hardcore rocker image suffers when he’s frightened by a scurrying robot), Jordin Sparks, Lisa Loeb (a hollogram who only has “three eyes for you”), Liz Phair (a peace activist concerned about the ramifications of galatic war, specifically planet-leveling lasers), Marc McGrath (whose laid-back, storyteller vibe seques into a call for war), MC Chris (a bounty hunter-turned-rapper), Reggie Watts (a droid suffering a mechanical breakdown), Springfield and Weird Al Yankovic (whose ditties are all about digusting far-out dishes), each trying to score a spot in the band with an awkward, intergalatic version of their music.

YouTube Space LA and Lucasfilm partnered to give four YouTube channels an opportunity to shoot and produce an original video inspired by “Star Wars” on the Mos Eisley cantina replica set in celebration of Star Wars Day this past Sunday.

The setting of one of “Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope’s” most famous sequences, the cantina featured the first meeting of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the long-debated showdown of Han and Greedo, and the memorable music of Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes. The “May the 4th be with YouTube” initiative marks the first on-location production event offered by YouTube Next Lab, the programming arm of YouTube Space LA, whose mission is to inspired the next generation of storytellers.

Participating YouTube channels also included:

• ApprenticeA’s “Clash at the Cantina.” Part of the on-going Star Wars-inspired action comedy video series between YouTubers Corey Vidal (ApprenticeA) and Craig Benzine (Wheezy Waiter), the video finds the guys taking to the cantina with a new lightsaber fight.

• BoredShortsTV’s “Kid Snippets: Star Wars Cantina.” In the latest episode, adult actors with children’s voices re-enact a well-known scene set in the cantina.

• YouTube Nation, a daily talk show, goes to a galaxy far, far away with a “Star Wars”-themed episode.
