Activist appointed to state Board of Education

CONCORD – The Executive Council confirmed the appointed of Bill Duncan to the state Board of Education in a 3-2 vote along party lines on Thursday, with Democratic councilors Chris Pappas of Manchester, Debora Pignatelli of Nashua, and Colin Van Ostern of Concord supporting Gov. Maggie Hassan's controversial nomination of the education activist.

Duncan's appointment was widely opposed by advocates of charter schools, home-schooling, and tax incentives for business-funded scholarships to private schools.

The retired Seacoast businessman has been a vocal supporter of traditional public schools as founder of Advancing Public Education. He has also been active in support of the Common Core State Standards.

"Bill's background in business and education will bring a valuable perspective to the Board of Education, and I applaud the Executive Council for today’s vote. I look forward to working with Bill and the entire Board to provide our young people with the robust, rigorous education that they need for success in the innovation economy," said Hassan in a statement released immediately after the vote.
