Bill would provide social media protection for students

CONCORD — The Senate Wednesday approved a bill that would prohibit colleges and universities from requiring or requesting their students to disclose or provide access to a personal social media account.

House Bill 1200 also restricts post secondary institutions from requiring students to be added to contact lists or provide other access to their social media accounts.

The bill does not restrict an institution’s right to investigate a complaint, restrict access to its computers or networks, or monitor use of its network.
The Senate version of the bill limits the prohibition to post-secondary institutions while the House version of the bill also includes educational institutions serving students from kindergarten to 12th grade.
The Senate had passed its own bill restricting access to social networks, but only for post-secondary institutions. The House added kindergarten to 12th grade to the prohibitions.

The Senate tabled HB 1200 after passing it.
