Hillsborough fire displaces 2 adults, 5 special-needs children

HILLSBOROUGH — A two-alarm fire punctuated by several exploding oxygen tanks destroyed an Autumn Road home on Friday, displacing two adults and five special-needs children, Fire Chief Kenny Stafford said.

The fire started shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday in a rear first-floor bedroom of the 28 Autumn Road house. It spread quickly, causing the tanks to rupture, Stafford said.“They were very loud and distinctive explosions,” he said.

Stafford said the house is “probably a total loss” and that the cause of the fire is under investigation. He said there were no injuries in the blaze and that the American Red Cross provided the residents with shelter and other assistance.
