Merrimack Valley football coach Jackson resigns

When the Merrimack Valley of Penacook football team begins practicing for the 2014 season, it will do so with a new head coach.

Dave Jackson confirmed Friday that he has resigned after guiding the Merrimack Valley program for three seasons.

“I’m resigning for personal reasons, and I’m going to leave it at that,” Jackson said.

Jackson steered Merrimack Valley to the program’s first playoff berth last season. The Pride finished with a 7-3 record following a loss to Portsmouth in the Division II East semifinals. Merrimack Valley did not win a game in 2012.

Merrimack Valley athletic director Kevin O’Brien said Jackson resigned as a physical education teacher at Merrimack Valley as well. O’Brien said he has no timetable for hiring a new football coach.

“I haven’t had time to assess that,” O’Brien said. “David resigned his position for personal reasons. He resigned as a teacher and as head football coach.”

Jackson said he plans to coach in this summer’s Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, the annual all-star football game between high school players from New Hampshire and Vermont. Jackson was named New Hampshire’s head coach in December.

Jackson has also been an assistant football coach at Nashua South, Manchester Memorial and St. Anselm College.
