College Roundup: SNHU wins in NE-10 baseball playoffs

The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team defeated New Haven 8-1 in Northeast-10 playoff action at Penmen Field in Hooksett on Friday.

The Penmen (37-12) will host Stonehill (30-18) today at 2 p.m. in the NE-10 winners’ bracket final. The double elimination championship weekend closes Sunday at 11 a.m., with a second game (if needed) to follow.

The game was tied 1-1 after two innings on home runs from Brendon Buckley for New Haven and Riley Palmer for SNHU.

It was all Penmen from there as SNHU posted three runs in the fifth and four in the seventh.

In the third, Manny Cruz and Al Stanton delivered RBI hits. Stanton added two more RBIs in the seventh and Mike Mastroberti drove in two. Palmer, of Goffstown, finished with three hits.

Derry’s Tim Viehoff got the win on the mound for SNHU, pitching into the seventh and striking out 10.

Southern New Hampshire 9, New Haven 3 (9 innings): At West Haven, Conn., the Penmen exploded for six runs in the ninth inning in NCAA playoff action Friday. SNHU (30-13) will play Adelphi (27-19) today at 11 a.m.

Cara Daly and Tesia Stanasek had the big hits in the ninth inning as both delivered two-RBI hits. Katie Caruso and Holly Eicher had two RBIs each for SNHU and pitcher Ali Maloof improved to 21-7 with a complete-game win, striking out eight.

Lebanon Valley 3, Keene State 0: At Union, N.J., Lebanon Valley senior Sam Derr tossed a no-hitter to lead the way in the opening game of the Kean University Regional at the NCAA Division III Championships Friday.

Keene State will play either Husson University or Kean University at 1:30 p.m. today in an elimination game.

Derr struck out five and faced three batters over the minimum for the Dutchmen (33-4). Keene State, which had a five game winning streak snapped, fell to 19-18.

The loss spoiled a solid effort from KSC starter Mariah Crisp, of Greenland, who struck out nine and scattered five hits, giving up just two earned runs.

The Owls had their best chance to score in the second inning when Katie Newell reached on a fielder’s choice and Rachel Boynton reached on an error. But they were left stranded when Caroline McSherry struck out to end the inning.
