Police can get new equipment through U.S. DOJ grant

DERRY — The Derry Police Department has a long list of items it plans to purchase thanks to a grant through the U.S. Department of Justice.

Town councilors agreed last week to enter into an agreement with Rockingham County for the $20,952 Justice Assistance Grant. As part of the agreement, Rockingham County will now apply for the grant. Following a 5 percent administrative fee that will go to the county, Derry will receive an award of $19,905, Derry Police Chief Edward Garone said during the council meeting.

Garone said the department plans to purchase equipment. Some of the items include flashlights that are used on weapons and the corresponding holsters. Camera equipment is another item that police plan to purchase, Garone said.

More items will be revealed and the public will have a chance to review and comment on the grant application during a public hearing scheduled for May 20, Garone said. Final approval of the grant will follow the public hearing, Garone said.

The amount of the award is determined by such factors as the types of crimes and volume of crimes in a community, Garone said.

According to the terms of the award, Rockingham county was selected by the Department of Justice to be the fiscal agent and applicant for the grant.

The deadline for filing the application is June 10.
