Berlin man beaten in home invasion in critical condition

BERLIN — Authorities are continuing to investigate a reported home invasion on the city’s west side in which a man was seriously beaten and is now listed in critical condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Berlin police in a prepared statement said they were called at 4:49 p.m. Sunday to 183 Jericho Road, also known as New Hampshire Route 110, for a report of a home invasion resulting in a serious assault.

Officers met a woman at the scene who told them that upon her arrival at the residence, she discovered that one of the doors had been kicked in and that one of the occupants was lying on the ground, “obviously beaten.”

While saying the victim suffered “major injuries,” Berlin police did not identify him, but said he was first taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin and later taken to DHMC.

Deputy Police Chief Brian Valerino on Tuesday said the incident is being investigated by his department and the N.H. State Police Major Crime Unit, whose immediate attention was refocused on Monday to the shooting death of a police officer in Brentwood.

With Berlin police for nearly a quarter century, Valerino said the city has seen an increase in home invasions over the past few years.

On Nov. 25, 2009, three men forced their way into a Third Street residence and demanded drugs, electronics and money from the occupants.

The male occupant retrieved a handgun and fatally shot one of the intruders. In June 2011, then Attorney General Michael Delaney concluded that the shooting was justified and no charges were brought.

On May 26, 2013, three Berlin residents were arrested after forcing their way into a York Street dwelling, where they allegedly assaulted the occupants and sprayed them with pepper gas.
