Portsmouth student's text lands him in hot water

PORTSMOUTH – A Portsmouth High School student's text Tuesday afternoon to a fellow classmate threatening to "shoot up the school" has landed him in hot water with authorities.

Police and school officials said the student who made the threat later texted the friend to say he was only kidding, but that wasn't enough to get him out of trouble.

In a release issued Tuesday afternoon by school superintendent Edward McDonough, high school principal Jeffrey Collins, and Portsmouth Police Capt. Mike Schwartz, police showed up at the student's home after he left school and quickly determined he had no weapons or access to any.

The release indicated the student acknowledged his poor judgment.

Police have not indicated if they will file charges, and school officials “will follow standard disciplinary protocol in dealing with this incident.”
