Car hits 1,000 pound propane tank; no injuries

MANCHESTER — The Crystal Lake apartment complex on Corning Road was evacuated for about 40 minutes Thursday night after a car knocked a 1000-pound propane tank off its foundation.

The accident tore apart pipes leading from the tank, as well as a twin tank next to it, to apartments, causing a propane leak, said city District Fire Chief Michael Gamache.

“It basically permeated through the whole neighborhood,” Gamache said.

Firefighters capped the broken line, stopping the leak after about 15 minutes, he said. There were no injuries in the accident. Police said the driver, Christopher Stark, who lives at the complex, was not charged.

Complex residents Lori Xie and Charlotte Goode said they believed an accident with the tanks was imminent. It was protected by a small two-pole concrete barrier, which Stark apparently drove around to hit the tanks.

“It’s not safe,” Xie said.

“I thought that should be better insulated for a long time,” Goode said. “They should have barriers protecting them.”
