Fisher Cats lose despite two Schimpf homers

Ryan Schimpf hit a pair of solo home runs and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats scored three runs in the seventh inning, but came up short in a 6-5 loss to the Binghamton Mets Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The loss is the sixth in a row for the Fisher Cats (15-25). The series concludes today at 1:35 p.m. The pitching match-up has Casey Lawrence (2-4) facing Mets hurler Tyler Pill (1-5).

The Fisher Cats trailed 6-2 after the Mets scored a pair of runs in the seventh on consecutive doubles by Matt Clark and Kevin Plawecki, but mounted a comeback.

The three-run frame began with consecutive singles from Michael Crouse and Andy Fermin. With one out, Peter Mooney drove in a run with a double. John Berti singled home Fermin and Mooney scored on a groundout by Kenny Wilson to make it 6-5.That was as close as the Fisher Cats would get, however, going down in order in the eighth and the ninth innings against the Mets' bullpen.

Matt Boyd (0-1) took the loss in his first Double-A decision. He completed five innings in his longest outing with New Hampshire, giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Schimpf's first blast came as he led off the fourth inning against Mets starter Rainy Lara (4-1). The home run cleared the right field wall to cut Binghamton's lead to 3-1.

In the sixth, trailing 4-1, Schimpf struck again with a long homer to right that cleared the access road behind the wall. The blast was his seventh of the season and pushed him into the team lead with 15 RBIs.

Notes: On Friday, the Fisher Cats parent club the Toronto Blue Jays promoted outfielder Brad Glenn to Triple-A Buffalo and received outfielder Matt Newman from Advanced-A Dunedin.
