Fisher Cats lose doubleheader opener

Albert Cartwright clouted a two-run homer in the sixth inning as Reading handed New Hampshire a 5-3 loss in Eastern League play Monday in the opener of a doubleheader at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Fightin Phils completed the sweep by winning the nightcap, 3-2, in eight innings. Anthony Phillips’ walk-off single plated Aaron Altherr with the winning run. Dustin Antolin took the loss for New Hampshire.

The nightcap loss was New Hampshire’s ninth straight setback.

In the opener, Cartwright’s homer against reliever Tyler Ybarra (1-1) came during a three-run sixth inning rally. Zach Collier scored the tying run when Edgar Duran reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Fisher Cats scored all their runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Kenny Wilson singled, stole second and scored on a one-out single from A.J. Jimenez. Ryan Schimpf followed with a single to right and took second base on the relay throw home. Jimenez, stationed at third base, scored when Gabe Jacobo grounded out and Schimpf was plated on a single by Matt Newman.

A fielding error by Nashua native Kevin Nolan in the fifth inning allowed Reading to score its first two runs.

New Hampshire starter Aaron Sanchez pitched five innings, allowing two hits and two runs.

He walked four and fanned six.
