Tossed beer bottle, customers thwart attempted robbery

MANCHESTER — A tossed bottle of beer and two unexpected customers were enough to send a gunman running for the door when he tried to rob a Somerville Street store Monday night, according to police.

Police said about 8 p.m., a masked gunman entered Shawn’s Corner Market at 912 Somerville St. He pointed the gun at a customer who was waiting at the counter for the store clerk who was at the rear of the store, according to police.

The masked robber ordered the customer to keep his hands up and then he walked towards the clerk who threw a bottle of beer at him, police said.

Simultaneously, two other customers entered the store, apparently startling the gunman, who ran out, police said. The clerk chased after him, throwing a second bottle of beer at the robber as he ran away, police said.

The would-be robber is described as a white male, about 6-foot-5 with a very thin build. He wore a black ball cap, a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. He also had a black bandanna masking his face.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 668-8711. Anonymous tips for cash rewards may be made by calling 624-4040 or online at manchestercrimeline.org .
