CLAREMONT — With no viable alternative, city councilors voted Wednesday to demolish the John McClane Clark Outdoor Pool at Veterans Park.

The demolition will be put out to bid soon and should take place sometime this summer, City Manager Guy Santagate said Monday.

Plans to demolish the pool were put on hold last year when resident and County Commissioner Jeffrey Barrette petitioned to save the 60-year-old city pool.

In January the city council members said they would give the public until April to come up with a plan to save the pool.

No one came forward, Santagate said.

In January, Barrette said the three-month time frame was not long enough to devise a plan and said he is baffled at the city’s plan to destroy a city resource.

“We recommended it over a year ago to demolish the pool because it was too costly to repair and we also have a nice indoor pool now at the new community center,” Santagate said Monday. In October, a report compiled by a firm hired by the city to study the pool confirmed that repairs to the pool would not be worth the money.

The Boston-based firm Bargmann Hendrie + Archetype, Inc. said in its report that an investment of about $460,000 by the city in order to reopen the current pool and bathhouse would not be a cost effective use of potential funds.

Santagate said Monday that amount would have just covered the pool lining. A full renovation and a renovation of the bathhouse, which is also in poor condition, would have cost over $1 million.

Built in the 1950s, the outdoor pool was last renovated in the 1970s. It was closed two summers ago because the large amounts of water leaking made chlorinating the pool properly difficult, creating a potential public health issue. The 35-year-old gutter system appears to be the source of the pool leaks.

Last spring the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center opened with a new indoor pool.

The John McLane Clark Outdoor Pool was only open eight weeks out of the year.
