Two-alarm fire contained at Merrimack condo units

MERRIMACK -- Fire crews were able to contain a two-alarm fire at a condominium development on Tuesday. Three people have been displaced by the blaze.

Investigators believe the fire, which began around 10:30 a.m. in a second-level townhouse unit at 12 Suncook Terrace, ignited when a new light fixture housed above a fish tank malfunctioned.

When firefighters arrived, heavy fire had taken over the second level of one of the units, according to Fire Chief Michael Currier.

"All of the occupants were out, and we evacuated all of the other units," said Currier, adding there were four attached townhouses that could have been damaged by the blaze.

Although three people live in the unit that caught fire, only one was home when the fire started. That resident, a female, suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene, said Currier.

"The fire was knocked down relatively quickly," Currier said, noting the blaze reached a second-alarm because it could have spread.

Currier said the fire was contained to the single unit, with the second floor receiving the most damage and the first and third floors receiving substantial heat and soot damage.

That unit is currently uninhabitable, Currier said. He said the family will be staying with relatives.

Fire crews from Nashua, Manchester and Bedford assisted Merrimack at the scene. Amherst helped provide station coverage.
