Buffer zones: Safety is not the issue

Legislators have passed a bill to allow buffer zones of up to 25 feet around abortion clinics, supposedly to protect the safety of women who use the clinics. Baloney. The bill has nothing to do with women’s safety.

The champions of the buffer zone bill are the same people who opposed the Women’s Health Protection Act earlier this year. That bill would have required abortion clinics to be licensed by the state Department of Health and Human Services. It was introduced in response to the appalling conditions discovered in the chamber of horrors that was Kermit Gosnell’s Philadelphia abortion clinic.

The bill would have required such amenities as hand-washing stations, areas for sterilizing surgical equipment, emergency exits, licensed medical doctors and trained medical assistants — pretty basic stuff. The pro-abortion lobby strongly opposed the bill, and it was killed in a lopsided vote in the House in March.

Now that same lobby claims that abortion clinics need buffer zones to protect women from assaults from pro-life protesters. Absolute rubbish. Physical confrontations by protesters are rare — and already illegal. Buffer zones are about preventing women from being exposed to pro-life arguments.

They are promoted for the same reason the abortion industry opposes efforts to provide abortion clinic customers with information about alternatives to abortion. Abortion is a lucrative business, and the clinics don’t want their customers driven away.

Once again, the pro-abortion lobby protects its business by moving to keep women ignorant, all in the name of protecting them.
