Mont Vernon killer Steven Spader injured in N.J. prison altercation
A New Hampshire man serving multiple life sentences for the brutal 2009 slaying of a Mont Vernon woman and the attempted murder of her daughter was injured in a May 15 altercation at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, according to New Hampshire corrections officials.
Steven Spader, who was transferred in February to the maximum security facility in New Jersey from the New Hampshire State Prison, did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to Jeffrey Lyons, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.
“I can confirm that we received information that Mr. Spader was injured in an altercation,” Lyons said. He referred further questions to New Jersey authorities, who are investigating the incident.
Deirdre Fedkenheuer, prison spokesperson for the New Jersey Department of Corrections, confirmed that Spader is still at the prison, but would not say if he was in the prison infirmary or in his cell.
“He’s alive in the prison. He isn’t at a hospital or anything, and he’s serving a life sentence. That’s all the information we can release,” she said.
Spader is one of four New Hampshire men convicted in the 2009 murder of Kimberly Cates, a 42-year-old nurse from Mont Vernon. His accomplice, Christopher Gribble, is now the only one of the four involved still being held in a Granite State prison.
Prison officials have never elaborated on the reasons for moving the three others, saying only that inmates are usually moved when officials feel their presence poses a threat to the prison itself, or the prisoners themselves are threatened.
Gribble, 24, remains in the Special Housing Unit at the state prison in Concord. He and Spader are both serving life sentences without the chance of parole.
Two other men charged in connection with the case are being held in prisons in Vermont. Quinn Glover, 22, is housed at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, Vt., and William Marks, 22, is housed at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt.
