Friends and family taking donations for Unity family who lost everything in a fire last week.

UNITY — In the wake of a fire that took their home May 16, the Shultz family is being embraced by the community, which is raising money and collecting household items for the family.

Mike and Sherry Shultz and their two adult children, Brenda and Clint, lost everything in the fire.

“They lost almost everything except for the clothes on their back,” said family friend Melissa Barrette. “They lost everything, so we’re taking (donations) for everything, pillows, sheets. Somebody donated a coffee maker to them. I even donated a couple of pocketbooks because they even lost their pocketbooks in the fire.”

Barrette is the staffing coordinator at Sullivan County Health Care in Unity.

The Shultz family has lived in Unity for many years and is well-known in the community, Barrette said. They have all at one time worked at the county nursing home.

Clint Shultz currently works at the nursing home, Barrette said.

Barrette is accepting donations in person at the county nursing home. Donations are also being accepted at the Sullivan County Commissioner’s Office at 14 Main Street in Newport.

Barrette has also started a campaign online that has already raised $330. A relative has also started a fundraiser for the family, Barrette said.

The Shultz family is currently staying with friends in Unity, so Barrette approached The Claremont Storage Center in Claremont, which is now donating a storage space for the donated items.

“That’s the thing; a lot of people donate these things and forget they don’t have a place to put them,” Barrette said.

The family plans to rebuild on their 2nd New Hampshire Turnpike property, she said.

Barrette can be reached at Sullivan County Health Care, 5 Nursing Home Drive, Claremont 03743 or at 542-9511 ext. 290.
