Locke may get call-up from Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates designated 35-year-old veteran starter Wandy Rodriguez for assignment Thursday and announced his spot in the rotation would be filled by either Brandon Cumpton or Jeff Locke of Conway, N.H., who are both thriving at Triple-A Indianapolis.

The 35-year-old Rodriguez is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in six starts this season. He was a mess Wednesday against Baltimore, throwing 61 pitches in just 1 2/3 innings while allowing six runs on seven hits.

Rodriguez was officially designated for assignment to make room to reactivate catcher Russell Martin from the disabled list.

The Pirates still must pay $7.5 million of Rodriguez’s 2014 salary, which is their share of a $13 million player option.

The Houston Astros pay the remaining $5.5 million.
