Red Sox put Victorino on DL, activate Nava, Workman

The Boston Red Sox placed right fielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hamstring.

It is the second time this season that Victorino has gone on the DL for the same injury.

To fill Victorino's spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled outfielder Daniel Nava from Triple-A Pawtucket. Nava was joined by pitcher Brandon Workman, who is expected to be activated for Sunday's start in place of left-hander Felix Doubront, who also is on the DL with a strained left shoulder.

The Red Sox were also without designated hitter David Ortiz and first baseman Mike Napoli for Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ortiz has a calf injury and Napoli is still dealing with flu-like symptoms, as well as hamstring, calf and finger pain.

Ortiz was planning to take Saturday off to rest but Napoli may miss a few more games. He was also out Wednesday and Thursday.

Victorino initially injured the hamstring during spring training and aggravated it while running to first base during Friday's loss.

Victorino is batting .242 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 21 games this season.

Nava started the season with Boston but was sent to the minors after batting just .149 with two home runs and three RBIs in 17 games. He had a breakout season last year when he batted .303 with 12 home runs and 66 RBIs in 134 games.
