BRENTWOOD — A man who allegedly threatened a woman with a box cutter outside a North Hampton grocery store during a botched kidnapping attempt will plead guilty next month instead of going to trial, court officials said. William Larochelle, 32, of 132 High St. Newburyport, Mass., is facing attempted kidnapping, attempted armed robbery, theft and criminal threatening charges for his encounter with the woman on Sept. 20.
Terms of the plea deal have not yet been made public, but he faces up to 7½ to 15 years in state prison on the attempted kidnapping charge.
Larochelle, who has pleaded not guilty, is being held at Rockingham County jail. He is scheduled to change his plea in Rockingham County Superior Court on June 23, according to court records.
Larochelle was arrested by North Hampton police moments after he tried to force the woman into a car. The woman had been retrieving items from her vehicle while parked in front of a Shaw’s supermarket when Larochelle approached with a box cutter-styled knife, a police affidavit says.“Give me a ride to Maine or I will cut you,” Larochelle allegedly told the woman.
Larochelle then climbed into the woman’s car through the driver’s side door and sat in the passenger’s side, but the woman refused to get in, the woman told police.
He climbed back into the driver’s seat and tried to start the woman’s car but may have had trouble with operating a standard shift, according to court documents.
The woman fled and called out to some men in the parking lot for help.
Larochelle ran from the vehicle and into woods across the street, police said. Police from area departments cordoned off a wooded area near the Shaw’s Supermarket on Lafayette Road until Larochelle was found in woods near Fern Road.
Larochelle put his hands in the air and told police Chief Brain Page that he was coming out.
The victim later identified Larochelle by his booking photo, police said. Larochelle is also facing a theft charge for allegedly breaking into another woman’s car and stealing peppermint candies, cigarettes, “and other miscellaneous items,” prosecutors said.
