Ruptured propane tank forces evacuation of Portsmouth service station

PORTSMOUTH — A Sunoco service station on Route 33 was evacuated Tuesday when a propane tank was ruptured, Fire Capt. Richard Murphy said.

A tractor-trailer hit a pipe leading to the 1,000-gallon tank, rupturing the tank shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"The damage was significant enough that it couldn’t be shut down," Murphy said. Most of the propane vented off, he said.

While the store was closed during the incident, crews were able to keep Route 33 open.

"The scene was pretty well-contained," he said.

Murphy said the truck driver likely was not aware of what happened before leaving the station.
